Why Do You Want To Be A Firefighter? Interview Question and Answer

What does an interviewer mean when he asks, “Why do you want to become a fire fighter?”
There are a few things which an interviewer wants to check when he asks such a question:

Why have you applied for the job?
Are you aware of the job specifications or is it just that you were inspired by a Hollywood movie to become one?
Are you aware of the stakes involved? If yes, what makes you apply?
Do you possess the required skill set, training and experience, and mental faculties to perform in life and death situations?

Once an interviewer is sure that the interviewee meets all the above mentioned attributes in the best possible way, he is quite likely to hire you.

Interviewer: “What makes you apply for the job of a firefighter?”

Interviewee: “Sir, it is my desire to serve the people, especially in times of dire need. I have the right skill sets and mental attitude required for the job. I am a quick thinker and have a propensity to stay calm in stressful conditions. I was one of the best athletes in university and have actively participated in outdoor excursions and scouting activities. I am sure I am fit for the job. I also understand that the job involves a lot of risks but with the support of my friends and family, I am sure I can deliver results from day one.”

Clearly, the interviewee has struck the right cord. He has exhibited that he has a strong inclination for adrenaline-charged activities and has the intent to help people in need. The interviewee has mentioned that he possesses the abilities and the temperament required to perform in high stress activities. He has further touched on the fact that he understands the risks involved and is still keen to go for it.

You can mention important skills that you posses. Some important skills required from firefighters are:

Physical agility and learning dexterity.
Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and associates.
Ability to perform well under adverse and tough conditions.
