What are Job Interviews all about?
Job interviews are part of almost every employment opportunity.
While the majority of these interviews are conducted in person, occasionally they are conducted via telephone or video conferencing.
The job interview is an important dialogue between you, the candidate, and the potential employer. During the interview you will be evaluated for the job position within the company.
The Purpose of the Job Interview
From the employer’s perspective, the purpose of a job interview is to hire the right applicant for the position. After all hiring good employees is behind the success of every business.
For you, the job applicant, the purpose of the job interview is to sell yourself. Your resume is like your advertisement for yourself. When done right, it gets you to the next stage – the job interview. Once here, you need to use the time to impress upon the interviewers why you are their best choice. Don’t be afraid to “toot your own horn.” This is not a time to be modest. Of course, you shouldn’t brag about yourself, but you should certainly sell your experience and your skills.
The job interview is the most commonly used method because it’s the most effective method. Few other methods would allow an employer to learn as much about your communication skills, your learning agility, your presentation skills, your personality, your overall appearance, how you interact with others, and a host of other impressions.
During the interview you will be asked questions, which can be both job related and personal related. Keep in mind that the interviewer is looking to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Be well prepared.
How to Prepare Yourself
Types of Interviews to Prepare For
There are a number of interview types.
You should be prepared for all them so that there are no surprises. By being prepared you will remain confident, and relaxed during the interview process, and this will be to your benefit when it comes to the interviewer(s) making their selection.
- With a structured interview, the questions are prepared, and each applicant will be asked the same questions so that the answers can later be compared. To prepare for this interview, practice answering clearly and concisely.
- With the competency based interview, questions focus on the past behavior and performance of the candidate in various job related situations. This gives you an opportunity to paint your past in a “good light.”
- The group interview splits the job applicants into several groups, with each group receiving a case to solve. The interview is conducted by an interview panel. Regardless of the skills of your group, take charge and make sure that the case is solved, even if that means you taking on more work than other candidates.
- With a stress interview, the candidate is interviewed using a number of psychological techniques and then the interviewer assesses the candidate’s reaction. The focus is to keep the candidate off balance throughout the interview. You need to breathe, relax, and don’t let the interviewer rattle you.
- With the panel interview, the job applicant meets an interview panel made up of personal from human resources, supervisors, and others. Preparation for the panel interview is the same as the structured interview except you will have more than one person asking you questions. Be sure to be articulate, and answer all questions.
- The behavioral interview, is an interviewing technique where the question is asked and the answer is analyzed, and predictions are made on how the job applicant would perform.
Practice Makes Perfect
A mock interview is an excellent way for you to practice for the interview. You can improve your answers, and learn how to clearly and concisely answer. This also presents an opportunity for you to practice breathing, posture, and overall body language. It is the best preparation tool available to you.
